Where LED wins

Where HPS still makes sense
HPS is not obsolete. If your upfront budget is tight, a 600W HPS lights a 4x4 for far less than a comparable LED, and it grows real weed. HPS also penetrates deep, dense canopies extremely well, which some large-scale and heavy-defoliation growers still value. And in a cold garage or basement, HPS heat that is a liability in summer becomes free warmth in winter. Those are real advantages, just narrower ones than they used to be.
The honest tradeoff with HPS is ongoing cost. Bulbs degrade and need replacing every year or so, and the higher electricity draw and cooling demand add up over the life of the light. Over two or three years, an efficient LED usually wins on total cost even though it costs more on day one.

New indoor grower buying today: get an LED sized to your space, roughly 240W to 320W for a 4x4. It saves on power and heat and forgives beginner mistakes. Tight on cash right now and comfortable managing heat: an HPS gets you growing for less upfront. Whatever you hang, match your light schedule to the stage and keep the light at the maker's recommended height so you do not bleach or stretch your plants.
