Diagnose cannabis nutrient deficiencies by location and pattern. Yellowing on old lower leaves usually means a mobile nutrient (nitrogen, magnesium, potassium) the plant is relocating. Problems on new top growth point to immobile nutrients (calcium, iron, sulfur). Before dosing anything, check pH, because most deficiencies are actually lockouts from pH drift.
Read the plant like a map
The fastest diagnostic trick we teach growers is to note where the symptom shows up. Mobile nutrients move around inside the plant, so when supply runs short, the plant strips them from old leaves to feed new growth. That means nitrogen, magnesium, and potassium deficiencies appear on lower, older foliage first. Immobile nutrients cannot be relocated, so shortages hit the newest top growth first. Calcium, iron, and sulfur fall in that camp.
Get that split right and you have already narrowed the field by half. From there, look at the pattern: whole-leaf yellowing versus veins staying green, spotting versus edge burn, clawing versus curling up.
Check pH before you dose
Here is the part most growers skip. A large share of what looks like a deficiency is really a lockout. The nutrient is in the pot, but the root zone pH has drifted out of range and the plant cannot absorb it. Iron and calcium lock out when pH runs high. Phosphorus and magnesium struggle when pH runs low. If you chase a false deficiency with more nutrients, you push PPM up and often make things worse.

The usual suspects in our mailbag
By far the most common issue we hear about is calcium and magnesium, especially from growers using reverse-osmosis or very soft tap water and from anyone in coco. Those media and waters carry almost no cal-mag, so unless you add it, plants run short fast. Rusty spotting on middle leaves and hooked new growth together usually scream cal-mag.
Nitrogen is the other big one, but in both directions. Too little and lower leaves fade and drop early. Too much and you get dark, clawing, leathery leaves that fold down like eagle talons. Fixing it without overcorrecting
Move in small steps. Confirm pH, then adjust one variable and wait three to five days. Plants respond slowly, and damaged leaves will not turn green again; you are watching new growth to judge whether the fix worked. Do not stack three corrections at once, because then you cannot tell what helped. For cal-mag, a standard supplement at label rate usually resolves things within a week. For a true nitrogen shortage in late veg, bump your grow formula. For toxicity, flush and cut PPM back.

Frequently asked questions
How do I tell a deficiency from a lockout?
A true deficiency means the nutrient is missing from your feed. A lockout means it is present but pH is blocking uptake. The tell is history: if you have been feeding a complete nutrient and still see symptoms, suspect pH first. Test runoff, correct it, and watch new growth before adding more nutrients.
Why is only the new growth affected?
Immobile nutrients like calcium and iron cannot be moved from old leaves to new ones. When supply drops, the newest growth suffers first because the plant cannot borrow from elsewhere. New-growth symptoms almost always point to calcium, iron, sulfur, or a high-pH lockout of those elements.
Will damaged leaves recover after I fix the problem?
Usually not. Yellowed or spotted tissue rarely greens back up. Judge your fix by the newest leaves the plant pushes out after you correct the issue. If those come in clean and healthy, the problem is solved even though the old damage stays visible.
My whole plant is yellowing at once, what is it?
Uniform yellowing across the whole plant often means a general nitrogen shortage late in the grow, which is normal in flower, or a serious pH lockout choking everything. Check pH and feed strength together. If runoff pH is fine and you are mid-veg, feed more nitrogen.
Deficiency-like symptoms can also come from nutrient lockout or a cal-mag shortage, so rule those out before adding more feed.
