The fastest way to get clones to root is heat under the plugs and humidity over the tops: hold the root zone at 75 to 80 F with a seedling heat mat and keep humidity above 75 percent under a dome. Add a fresh angled cut, a proper gel dip, and gentle light, and cuttings that used to take three weeks will throw roots in 7 to 10 days.
Every trick below attacks one of the two things that slow rooting: cold stems or stressed leaves.
9 ways to speed up rooting
- Warm the root zone. 75 to 80 F at the plug is the single biggest lever. A $20 heat mat with a thermostat pays for itself on the first tray.
- Keep humidity 75 to 85 percent. Unrooted cuttings drink through their leaves. A dome with closed vents for the first 3 or 4 days keeps them from wilting.
- Cut at 45 degrees below a node. More exposed surface, more root sites. Use a sterile razor, not dull scissors that crush the stem.
- Dip in rooting gel immediately. Seconds matter; an air bubble in the stem (an embolism) can stall a cutting for good.
- Trim fan leaves in half. Less leaf, less water demand, more energy for roots.
- Go easy on light. 18 hours of gentle output. Blasting unrooted clones with full veg light stresses them into survival mode.
- Do not soak the plugs. Wet but wrung out. Waterlogged plugs suffocate the stem and invite rot.
- Take cuttings from a hydrated, unfed mother. Water the day before, skip nitrogen right before cutting. High nitrogen tissue roots slower.
- Leave them alone. Tugging on cuttings to check tears off root nubs. Look for roots at the plug sides instead.
