To clone a plant, cut a 4 to 6 inch stem just below a leaf node, strip the lower leaves, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, and set it in moist growing medium under high humidity. In 7 to 21 days it grows its own roots and becomes an independent plant, genetically identical to the one you cut it from.
This is called propagation by stem cutting, and it is one of the oldest techniques in horticulture. Nearly every seedless grape, apple variety, and named rose in existence is a clone of an original plant.
The 6 step method
- Pick a healthy parent. Choose a plant in active growth, not flowering, and water it the day before.
- Take the cutting. Use a sterile blade to cut at a 45 degree angle just below a node, the bump where leaves attach. Nodes hold the cells that become roots.
- Trim it down. Remove the lowest leaves and cut large leaves in half. Less foliage means less water loss while the cutting has no roots.
- Dip in rooting hormone. Coat the bottom inch immediately. Gel clings best and seals the wound.
- Plant and cover. Push it into a moist starter plug, soil, or perlite, then cover with a humidity dome or clear bag. Aim for 75 percent plus humidity and 72 to 79 F.
- Wait and vent. Keep light gentle, crack the dome a little more each day after day 4, and check for white roots at the base after a week.
Some plants skip the medium entirely. Mint, basil, and pothos will root in a plain glass of water on a windowsill. Woody plants like rosemary or lavender take the longest, often a month or more. NC State Extension publishes a species by species reference for propagating by stem cuttings if you are working outside the usual suspects.
Why growers clone instead of planting seeds
A seed is a genetic lottery, a mix of two parents. A clone is a copy. It keeps the exact flavor, size, growth speed, and, in cannabis, the potency of the plant it came from, and it is already past the fragile seedling stage. That predictability is why commercial growers keep mother plants for years and cut from them repeatedly. If you are weighing the tradeoffs for a cannabis grow specifically, our clones vs autoflowers comparison lays them out.

Can you clone any plant?
Most soft stemmed plants clone easily. Woody shrubs and trees are harder and slower, and a few species will not root from stem cuttings at all.
Do you need rooting hormone to clone a plant?
No, but it raises success rates and speeds things up. Easy rooters like mint and pothos do fine without it.
Is a cloned plant weaker than the original?
No. A healthy cutting from a healthy plant grows just as vigorously, since it carries identical genetics.
