Cal-Mag Deficiency in Cannabis: Signs, Causes and Fixes

Short answer

Calcium and magnesium deficiency shows up as rust colored spots on leaves (calcium) or yellowing between the veins while the veins stay green (magnesium). It is most common in coco coir, with reverse osmosis or soft water, and under high intensity LED lighting. The usual fix is 2 to 5 ml per gallon of a cal-mag supplement, added before your base nutrients, with pH corrected to 5.8 to 6.2 in coco or hydro and 6.2 to 6.5 in soil.

Before you add anything, check your pH. Most suspected cal-mag deficiencies are actually lockout, where the nutrients are present but the root zone pH prevents uptake. Adding more cal-mag to a pH problem makes it worse.

What calcium and magnesium actually do

These are secondary nutrients, needed in smaller amounts than nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, but a shortage of either stops growth just as hard.

Calcium

  • Builds cell walls, which is why deficiency shows first in new growth
  • Immobile in the plant, so it cannot be moved from old leaves to new ones
  • Moves only in the transpiration stream, pulled upward with water
  • Supports root tip development

Magnesium

  • The central atom of the chlorophyll molecule, so no magnesium means no photosynthesis
  • Mobile in the plant, so it is moved from old leaves to new growth under shortage
  • Activates many enzyme systems

That mobility difference is the single most useful diagnostic fact on this page. Magnesium deficiency appears on old, lower leaves first, because the plant strips them to feed new growth. Calcium deficiency appears on new, upper growth first, because the plant cannot move existing calcium to where it is needed. If you know which end of the plant is affected, you already know which nutrient you are looking at.

Symptoms, separated

Most guides treat cal-mag as one thing. It is two, and the treatment emphasis differs.

Interveinal yellowing with green veins on lower leaves is close to diagnostic for magnesium. Very little else produces that exact pattern in that exact position.

Careful with nitrogen. Nitrogen deficiency also yellows lower leaves first, which is the most common misdiagnosis here. The difference is that nitrogen deficiency yellows the whole leaf uniformly, including the veins. Magnesium leaves the veins green. Look at the veins before you reach for a bottle.

Check pH before you add anything

This is the step that gets skipped, and skipping it is why people end up with both a deficiency and a toxicity at the same time.

Calcium and magnesium can be perfectly present in your reservoir and still be unavailable if root zone pH sits outside the uptake range. That is lockout, not deficiency, and adding more of a nutrient the plant cannot absorb simply raises salt levels while the symptoms continue.

Measure runoff, not just the water going in. Input pH tells you what you gave the plant. Runoff tells you what the root zone is actually sitting at, and those two numbers are frequently different.

Why it happens

Coco coir

Coco has a high cation exchange capacity and naturally holds potassium and sodium, which it releases while binding calcium and magnesium out of your feed. A coco grow needs cal-mag supplementation from the very start, in effectively every feed. This is not a sign anything has gone wrong, it is simply how the medium behaves. Reverse osmosis and soft water

Tap water in many areas already supplies useful calcium and magnesium. RO water has had them stripped out along with everything else, so a nutrient schedule that worked on tap water will run short on RO. Check your starting water. If it reads under roughly 50 ppm, assume you are supplying all cal-mag yourself.

High intensity LED lighting

Modern LEDs drive faster growth and higher transpiration than the lighting most feed charts were written for. Faster growth means higher demand for cell wall material, which means more calcium. Growers upgrading from older fixtures frequently meet cal-mag deficiency for the first time without changing anything else.

Transpiration, which is where VPD comes in

This one is under appreciated. Calcium is immobile and moves only in the transpiration stream. If transpiration is slow, calcium does not reach new growth regardless of how much is in the reservoir.

So a room sitting at low VPD, meaning high humidity relative to temperature, can produce textbook calcium deficiency symptoms while the feed is entirely correct. Growers then add more cal-mag, see no improvement, and add more again. The actual fix is environmental. If your calcium symptoms will not respond to feeding, check your VPD before you increase the dose any further.

Heavy potassium feeding

Potassium, calcium and magnesium compete for uptake. Aggressive bloom boosters, which are potassium heavy, can induce magnesium deficiency in mid flower even though nothing about your magnesium input changed.

Order of operations matters more than most people expect:

  1. Add cal-mag to plain water first, before any base nutrients, and mix it in.
  2. Then add base nutrients in the manufacturer's order.
  3. Then adjust pH, last, once everything is in solution.

Adding cal-mag into an already concentrated nutrient solution risks precipitation, where calcium binds with phosphates and sulphates and drops out as a solid. You will see it as white sediment at the bottom of the reservoir. Precipitated calcium is unavailable to the plant, so a feed can test correct on paper and still deliver almost nothing.

Recovery timing is worth setting expectations on. New growth should look normal within seven to ten days. Existing damaged leaves will not recover. Spotted and yellowed leaves stay that way, so judge success by what emerges next, not by whether the damage disappears.

A diagnostic sequence you can follow

Symptoms overlap enough that guessing is expensive. Work through this in order and you will land on the right cause rather than the most obvious one.

  1. Where on the plant is it? Lower and older points to magnesium or nitrogen. Upper and newer points to calcium. This one question eliminates most of the possibilities immediately.
  2. Look at the veins. If the tissue is yellow but the veins stay green, that is magnesium. If the whole leaf including veins is uniformly pale, that is nitrogen and cal-mag will not fix it.
  3. Check runoff pH. Out of range means lockout. Correct the pH and wait before changing the feed at all. This step alone resolves a large share of suspected deficiencies.
  4. Check runoff EC or ppm. High means salt build up, and the answer is a flush rather than more nutrients. Low means genuine underfeeding.
  5. Check your source water ppm. Under about 50 means RO or very soft water and you are supplying all cal-mag yourself.
  6. Check the medium. Coco needs cal-mag in effectively every feed regardless of symptoms.
  7. Only now, adjust the dose. Raise to roughly 5 ml per gallon for two or three feeds, then drop back to maintenance.
  8. If nothing improves in ten days, stop adding. Look at VPD and transpiration instead. Continuing to raise the dose past this point causes a second problem on top of the first.

What is actually in a cal-mag bottle

Most cal-mag products are calcium nitrate and magnesium sulphate, often with a little chelated iron. Two consequences follow from that, and neither is obvious from the label.

It contains nitrogen. Calcium nitrate means you are adding nitrogen every time you add cal-mag. In vegetative growth that is usually welcome. In late flower it can be counterproductive, keeping the plant vegetative when you want it ripening. If you are running cal-mag heavily in week seven and wondering why your plants still look green and leafy, this is why. Some manufacturers sell a low nitrogen or nitrogen free version specifically for late flower.

Chelation matters. Chelated minerals are bound to an organic molecule that keeps them soluble and available across a wider pH range. Cheaper non chelated products are more likely to precipitate out of solution, which is the white sediment problem described above. If you have had cal-mag apparently do nothing, chelation quality is worth checking before you conclude the plant did not need it.

Also read your base nutrient label before buying anything. A large number of complete base nutrients already include calcium and magnesium at reasonable levels, particularly those formulated for coco. Stacking a separate cal-mag on top of an already sufficient base is one of the more common routes to overdosing.

Fresh cuttings are the stage growers most often get wrong in the other direction. A clone with barely any roots cannot take up much of anything, and heavy feeding at that point burns tips and slows establishment. Feed lightly until roots are clearly established, then scale up.

Cal-mag in flower

Demand does not fall in flower, it usually rises, because bud sites are new growth and calcium is needed to build them. Weeks four to six are the common failure point, for three reasons at once: bloom nutrients are potassium heavy and compete with magnesium, the plant is building a lot of new tissue, and late flower humidity is often being lowered, which changes transpiration.

Keep cal-mag going through flower. Taper only in the final week or two alongside your general flush, if you flush at all.

Can you use too much cal-mag?

Yes, and it is a genuine problem rather than a theoretical one. Because cal-mag is widely treated as harmless, growers add it as a default response to any leaf symptom.

Signs of overdoing it:

  • Rising EC or ppm without a matching improvement in the plant
  • Leaf tip burn that looks like nutrient burn, because that is what it is
  • Lockout of other nutrients, particularly iron, manganese and potassium
  • Salt build up in the medium, and pH drift over time
  • White crust forming on the medium surface

Excess calcium in particular blocks potassium and magnesium uptake, which means overdosing cal-mag can produce a magnesium deficiency. If symptoms worsened after you increased the dose, that is a strong signal to flush with pH corrected plain water and restart at a maintenance level rather than pushing higher.

Prevention

  • Know your water. Test starting ppm and pH. Everything downstream depends on it.
  • Supplement coco from day one rather than waiting for symptoms.
  • Check runoff pH weekly, not just input pH.
  • Inspect lower leaves regularly. Magnesium announces itself there first and is easy to catch early.
  • Keep VPD in range so calcium can actually move up the plant.
  • Do not stack supplements blindly. Many base nutrients already contain calcium and magnesium. Read labels before adding a separate bottle.
