Indoors, the light sets the ceiling and everything else decides how close you get to it. The standard benchmark is grams of dried flower per watt of actual light draw:

Three things about this math that save you from bad conclusions:
- Use actual draw, not "equivalent" wattage. A light marketed as "1000W equivalent" that pulls 150 watts from the wall is a 150 watt light, and 0.8 g/W on it is 120 grams, not 800.
- The per-plant number is just the total divided by the count. Four plants under 480 watts do not each get 480 watts. One big trained plant and four medium ones under the same light yield about the same total; the choice is about veg time and plant count limits, not total weight.
- g/W assumes the canopy fills the light's footprint. A lonely untrained plant under a big light wastes most of the photons on the floor. Filling the space is what training is for.
Outdoor: where the huge numbers come from
Outdoors there is no wattage ceiling; the sun is free and unlimited. Yield scales with plant volume, and plant volume scales with root room and season length:

The catch is that outdoor yield is a bet on the back half of the season. Everything that matters happens in September and October, exactly when rain and cold nights arrive, and a wet week during ripening can hand a quarter of that giant plant to bud rot. What a one-pound plant actually looks like
"A pound per plant" is the number everyone quotes and few have seen. Dried, a pound is 454 grams: roughly four hundred fifty solid grams of trimmed flower, or about two full gallon jars packed. The plant that produces it is not a tent plant that got lucky:
Indoors, a pound from a single plant means monopolizing at least a 4x4 tent and 450+ watts with a long veg and serious training. Outdoors it means a plant with a six-foot frame, thirty-plus gallons of root zone or open ground, planted early and finished healthy. Both are achievable. Neither happens by accident.
How many plants per tent?
Plant count does not change the total much, but it changes the timeline and the workload a lot. The light's footprint produces roughly the same weight however you slice it; more plants just fill the canopy with less veg time, while fewer plants take longer but mean fewer pots to water and fewer plants against any legal count.
